Origin

Transverse processes of vertebrae C1-C4

Insertion

Medial border of the scapula (between superior angle and root of spine)

Actions

  • Elevates scapula
  • Tilts the glenoid cavity inferiorly by downwardly rotating the scapula
  • Assists in neck extension and lateral flexion

Innervation

  • Dorsal scapular nerve (C4, C5)
  • Cervical nerves (C3, C4)

Blood Supply

  • Dorsal scapular artery
