Posterior surface of ilium (between anterior & posterior gluteal lines)

Insertion

Greater trochanter of femur (lateral & superoposterior facet)

Actions

  • Hip abduction
  • Hip medial rotation (anterior muscle fibers)
  • Hip lateral rotation (posterior muscle fibers)
  • Stabilises pelvis when standing on one leg

Innervation

  • Superior gluteal nerve (L4, L5, S1 nerve roots)

Blood Supply

  • Superior gluteal artery
