  • Bilateral contraction: extension of the trunk and neck (at cervical and thoracic spine)
  • Unilateral contraction: lateral flexion of the trunk and neck (at cervical and thoracic spine)


  • Posterior rami of the lumbar, thoracic, and cervical nerves

Blood Supply

  • Dorsal branches of the posterior intercostal artery, deep cervical artery, and muscular branches of vertebral artery
